How Extracurricular Activities Benefit Foster Youth

Extracurricular participation is much more than a hobby – it’s an investment in a child’s well-being and future. Here are some of the key benefits for children (especially those in foster care) when they get to take part in sports, arts, and other after-school activities.

How Extracurricular Activities Benefit Foster Youth

Extracurricular participation is much more than a hobby – it’s an investment in a child’s well-being and future. Here are some of the key benefits for children (especially those in foster care) when they get to take part in sports, arts, and other after-school activities.

Improved Academic Outcomes

  • Better attendance, motivation, and overall achievement

  • Higher odds of on-time graduation and stronger grades for foster youth who participate

  • Even one after-school activity can significantly reduce dropout risk

  • Lays a stronger foundation for long-term educational success

Personal Growth & Life Skills

  • Builds persistence, responsibility, teamwork, and leadership

  • Teaches discipline and time management (e.g., mastering music, training for sports)

  • Boosts self-esteem and a “can-do” mindset

  • Soft skills transfer to school, work, and adulthood

Social Connections & Belonging

  • Provides positive peer groups and real friendships; reduces loneliness

  • Connects youth with caring adult mentors (coaches, instructors)

  • Creates a sense of normalcy and support despite past challenges

Emotional Well-Being & Resilience

  • Healthy outlets for stress and big emotions

  • Channels feelings into something constructive and joyful (sports, art, music)

  • Repeated positive experiences aid healing from trauma and build resilience

  • Increases self-esteem and reduces isolation as kids find passions

Positive Behavior & Future Success

  • Structured, supervised time lowers risky behaviors (delinquency, substance use)

  • Clear goals help keep youth on track—especially important for foster youth

  • Stronger connection to school and community improves attitudes and conduct

  • Focus on positive goals supports better long-term outcomes

Removing Barriers and Expanding Opportunities in Utah

Unfortunately, many of the enriching experiences that other children take for granted – joining a soccer team, learning an instrument, going to summer camp – are often out of reach for children in foster care. Foster families frequently struggle with the costs of fees, uniforms, instruments, or transportation, especially since foster youth may move homes and schools multiple times.

Our nonprofit exists to remove these barriers and ensure foster youth in Utah (ages 2–18) can participate in any extracurricular activity they’re passionate about. We provide funding and support so that a child in foster care can, for example, take guitar lessons, attend a karate class, ride horses, play on a basketball team, learn to swim, join a dance or cheer group, explore art and cooking classes, or go to summer camp – whatever sparks their interest. By covering the costs and logistics, we open the door for them to pursue their talents and dreams.

This access to extracurricular activities is life-changing for our youth. It gives them the chance to develop their identity and discover what they love. A shy teen can find her voice in a choir or drama club; a little one who has experienced trauma can smile and laugh at swim lessons; a youth who has moved from home to home can finally feel like part of a team. Beyond the measurable improvements in grades or behavior, these moments of joy, pride, and normalcy are priceless. Every child deserves to grow, thrive, and enjoy being a kid, and through extracurricular experiences, we help make that possible for Utah’s foster youth. The skills they gain, the confidence they build, and the relationships they form today will continue to benefit them long into the future.

Our impact is seen in every child who finds belonging on a team, achieves a personal goal, or simply smiles a little brighter because they had the chance to do something they love.
